Thanks to Building Community Cambodia and the people who purchased gifts through the OneLoveCambodia Etsy store, Nita is free-wheeling again and ready to return to school next semester.
In early 2020, Heng, who works for Bracelets4Buildings (B4B) referred Samat (29yrs) and his daughter, Nita (7yrs) to the Siem Reap Food Bank. They live in the same rural village as Heng outside Siem Reap city and needed food support.
Naret set off on her motorbike and travelled 15 kms to their village to deliver a basic food pack. What she found when she arrived was a father and his daughter with no income living in a meagre lean-to. Samut was paralysed in a work accident and after his wife left, Nita became his primary caregiver. Nita spends many hours caring for her father and foraging for food and with no transport it was difficult for her to attend school. The school is 1 km and the market 3 kms from their home. Naret returned 2 days later and gifted her own bike to Nita. Naret has worked with the family for the past few years providing a little food security and arranging medical and rehabilitation treatment for Samat to help give them hope for a better future.
On a recent visit, Naret discovered that her old bike was broken leaving Nita with no transportation and sadly the SRFB did not have sufficient funds to buy her a new one. But thanks to the generosity of Building Community Cambodia, and the people who purchased gifts through their OneLoveCambodia Etsy store, Nita is back on the saddle .
Last week, Naret and her nephews, Phanna and Lang, rode out to Nita’s home by moto to deliver her new bike… YES, a bike on a bike. LOL! Not an easy ride, 30 mins mostly on rough, muddy dirt roads. Well done team!
Phanna and Lang on their way to Nita’s home to deliver her new bicycle! Naret leading the way along the muddy rural roads
As you can see from the smile on Nita’s face, she is very happy with her new bike and she sends a big thank you to everyone who helped make it possible.
Building Community Cambodia also gifted her a new school bag, school supplies, and funds for a new school uniform. During the current school break, Naret will take Nita to the shop to buy her uniform so she will be already to continue her education when school resumes.
Education is the most valuable gift of all. People like Nita, who are born into poverty struggle to get a good education. But a good education is essential in the fight against poverty. Nita would like to study English. This subject is not covered at public schools in Cambodia and in rural villages it costs approx. US$10 per month. If you would like to help Nita learn English, please reach out to Building Community Cambodia via their social outreach program.
Thank you also to Cody, from Give the Goodness Global who has sponsored this month’s food hamper for Samat and Nita.
Working together we can help break the cycle of poverty for families in Cambodia.
