The Siem Reap Food Bank (SRFB) was foundered in March 2020 by Naret Chhoy, the Director/Trustee of Ability Fair Trade Village (AFTV), formerly trading as Genevieve’s Fair Trade Village (GFTV). The original aim of the food bank was to provide food support for persons living with disabilities to help them through the COVID-19 economic crisis.

However, it soon became obvious that food insecurity in Siem Reap Province had a more permanent face and that among the elderly and single-parent families there is a long-term need for food support.

Low-income families who lost their income due to COVID-19 are also in need of food support at least until the tourism industry revives and people can return to earning a sustainable living. But that is unlikely to occur for at least another year according to travel industry spokespeople.

The plan is to register the SRFB as a completely separate NGO that will be governed by a volunteer Board of Directors acting on behalf of the community.
