The Siem Reap Food Bank (SRFB) provides essential food care packs to persons living with disabilities, the elderly and single-parent families who are food insecure. We are also helping families that have lost their income due to COVID-19.

COVID-19 Impact

Since 2007, over 2 million foreigners visited the Angkor temples each year. Due to COVID-19 international tourism in 2020 has dropped by 99% (Pear Anderson, 2020). Many Cambodians rely on the tourist sector for their income – service workers in the hotel and restaurant sectors, tuk-tuk drivers, laundry workers… The loss of income for all these low-income families due to the rapid and unexpected closure of borders at the beginning of the covid-19 onset has had an enormous impact on the community. Most of these workers do not have savings to fall back on.

The SRFB will help any family who is genuinely in need of food support, whether their situation is temporary or long term, providing there are funds available.

Annual Fundraising Event

For the inaugural Life Cycle Cambodia 2020 fundraising event 9 people with disabilities cycled 251 km from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap over 4 days. Due to COVID this annual event has been cancelled. We hope to host another cycle event in 2023.

Community Projects

The SRFB collaborates with local stakeholders and engages with local communities to research their immediate and future needs. From this research the need for urban families to learn how to grow their own food and have access to a community garden was identified.

The Siem Reap Food Bank originally operated out of Genevieve’s Fair Trade Village premises when the shop closed due to the economic impact of COVID-19. The shop was located in the heart of the tourist district and did not have land for a community garden. When the lease expired in October 2021 the food bank relocated Wat Svay Village on the edge of Siem Reap city. The new location includes 2 sections of land suitable for growing crops that the landlord, Sophorn Apartments has kindly donated for SRFB use.  The Community Garden is an ever-evolving and growing project.

& Help End Hunger

A basic food care pack will help feed an average family of 4 for one month. The cost includes US$5 cash to assist families with utility costs and a delivery fee of US$3. The delivery fee helps to take care of a tuk-tuk driver with a disability and his family. Since March 2020 we have served over 300 needy families. We continue to provide food, supplies and toiletries for the most vulnerable families in Siem Reap. However, we need your help to keep fighting hunger.

Together we can make a difference.
Please give so more can live!
